Peter Obi, the NDC's presidential candidate, has called on Nigerian youths to reclaim their nation. On Friday, he posted the plea on his verified X account, expressing alarm over escalating insecurity nationwide.
Obi referenced the 2014 abduction of Chibok schoolgirls as a turning point. He noted that single incident united the country and sparked global outcry through the #BringBackOurGirls movement.
"Young Nigerians must refuse to become indifferent," the former Anambra governor wrote. "We cannot normalise failure.
Take back your country!"
According to Obi, the numbers tell a troubling story. During President Buhari's eight years in office, Nigeria recorded approximately ten school abductions, he said.
Under President Tinubu's administration, the situation has worsened. Just three years into his tenure, over ten school abductions have already occurred, Obi noted.
Yet national response has drastically changed, he observed. Neither sustained outrage nor comparable international attention has followed these recent tragedies as it did for Chibok.
"Have we grown so accustomed to insecurity that it no longer shocks us?" Obi asked in the statement. His question suggested Nigerians had accepted the unacceptable as routine.
He expressed concern about the government's priorities. Those in power appear focused on political maneuvering rather than tackling urgent citizen needs, Obi argued.
Millions of Nigerians face mounting insecurity, poverty, and hardship daily. Leadership should address these crises immediately, not postpone action for electoral calculations, he insisted.
