Peter Obi has picked Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for 2027. The NDC presidential candidate made the announcement Saturday at his party's national convention in Abuja.
Obi promised that Kwankwaso won't be sidelined as vice president. In his words, the VP would play an active role in government, not serve as a "spare tyre."
"The government we plan to create will not be one where anyone can claim that the vice president is just a spare part," Obi told delegates at the event.
He stressed that decision-making would be a shared responsibility between him and Kwankwaso. Both men would consult on major issues affecting the nation, according to Obi.
Obi and Kwankwaso ran separately in the 2023 presidential election. They finished third and fourth respectively, behind winner Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.
Kwankwaso contested on the NNPP platform and secured victory only in Kano state. He remains a dominant political force in the northern state.
The NDC candidate believes both men share similar ideals and vision for Nigeria. Obi noted that Kwankwaso is committed to education and security improvements.
"He believes in education and security. We will join forces to make sure it happens," Obi said at the convention.
Obi emphasized his desire to build an inclusive administration with genuine partnership at its core. He said every team member would have a meaningful voice in governance matters.
This marks a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential race. Both politicians now unite under the NDC banner after their separate campaigns four years ago.
