The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has frowned on what it calls the “misguided and opportunistic critique” by the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the recent flooding in Agbor triggered by an intense downpour.
In a statement released by the Delta PDP Publicity Secretary, Hon. Sunday Apah, the party condemned the APC’s attempts to politicize a natural disaster, describing their claims as “inaccurate, irresponsible, and a disservice to the people of Delta.”
While expressing deep sympathy for residents whose property was affected by the floods, the PDP made it clear that blaming the Oborevwori-led government for a natural weather event is “a stark oversimplification of complex environmental challenges.”
“Flooding is a global issue. Developed nations like the UK, Germany, Spain, Argentina, and even Dubai have suffered devastating floods in recent years. To suggest that a local government should be held solely responsible for a climate-driven natural disaster is intellectually dishonest,” the statement read.
The PDP emphasized that the state government has not been passive in the face of such challenges. From legacy drainage systems initiated by past administrations to the ongoing strategic stormwater projects under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta State continues to strengthen its flood mitigation infrastructure.
Noteworthy projects mentioned include storm drainages at Ogbeogonogo Market and Asaba Specialist Hospital, as well as ongoing work in Owa-Alero, Okuokoko, Ugolo-Okpe, Osubi, and parts of Warri, all aimed at bolstering flood control across the state.
“To disregard these continued efforts is to ignore the tangible commitment our government has shown. Rather than weaponize a natural disaster for cheap political gain, the APC should engage in constructive discourse and contribute to lasting solutions.”
The PDP further expressed disappointment that the APC would use a moment of hardship for political theatre rather than solidarity, stressing that crises should unite, not divide.
“Deltans deserve leadership that prioritizes solutions over soundbites and unity over division. Our people are watching. This is not the time for political posturing but for a collaborative effort to enhance resilience.”
Reaffirming its dedication to protecting the lives and property of citizens, Delta PDP called on all political stakeholders—including the opposition—to rise above partisanship and support meaningful, long-term strategies for climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
“Let us face the future not as fragmented factions but as partners in progress. That is the call of leadership. That is the expectation of the people of Delta.”
