PDP Dominates Bayelsa Council Polls: Sweeps All Seats Amidst Opposition Boycott

The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) conducted the local government elections, marking the first council polls under the Senator Douye Diri-led administration.

The elections were characterized by a lack of competition, as the opposition parties chose not to participate.

In Ogbia Local Government Area, Golden Jeremiah of the PDP emerged victorious with 42,462 votes.

In Southern Ijaw LGA, Target Segibo, a former state House of Assembly member, won with 36,326 votes.

Onniye Isaac, also a pioneer member of the state House of Assembly, secured a win in Ekeremor LGA with 35,177 votes.

Sagbama Local Government Area saw Mrs. Alice Tangi of the PDP win with 51,543 votes, while Leilei Tariye emerged victorious in Kolokuma-Opokuma LGA with 27,823 votes.

In Yenagoa LGA, Bulodisiye Ndiwari was declared the Mayor after receiving 56,103 votes.

The trend of PDP dominance continued in Nembe and Brass LGAs, with David Alagoa and Lucky Febo winning with 11,829 and 35,709 votes, respectively.

The absence of the APC and LP in the electoral process has raised concerns about the health of the democratic system in Bayelsa State.

Critics argue that the lack of opposition participation undermines the credibility and legitimacy of the election results.

The PDP’s sweep of the Bayelsa council polls highlights the party’s strong support base in the state.

However, the absence of the APC and LP raises questions about the state’s democratic culture and the need for a more inclusive and competitive political environment.

As Bayelsa State moves forward, it is essential for the government to address these concerns and ensure that future elections are conducted in a transparent and fair manner, with the participation of all major political parties.
