PDP Chieftain Sowunmi Laments Party’s Internal Crisis, Calls for Intervention of Obasanjo and Jonathan

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain Segun Sowunmi expressed disappointment over the ongoing internal crisis within the party, calling for the intervention of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

Sowunmi’s remarks come in the wake of a group of PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives demanding the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and accusing him of working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP has been grappling with internal conflicts, particularly the “Wike problem,” referring to the contentious role of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in the party’s affairs.

Sowunmi lamented that the PDP has been unable to resolve these issues, even a year after the 2023 general elections.

He expressed sadness that the party, which is supposed to be a legacy institution for Nigeria, is suffering from internal strife and failing to consolidate its gains.

Sowunmi criticized the inaction of the PDP’s founding fathers, including Obasanjo and Jonathan, for not stepping in to resolve the crisis and reconcile warring factions within the party.

He believes that their intervention is crucial in ensuring the stability and future success of the PDP.

The internal crisis within the PDP has been a significant challenge for the party, as it struggles to maintain its position as a major opposition party in Nigeria.

The calls for Damagum’s resignation and accusations of him working for the APC have further exacerbated the situation, highlighting the deep divisions within the party.

As the PDP navigates this difficult period, the intervention of its founding fathers and the successful resolution of the internal crisis will be critical in determining the party’s future and its ability to effectively challenge the ruling APC.
