Nigeria stands as Africa's most attractive investment destination, despite current headwinds facing the continent, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has declared. He cited the nation's vast market, youthful and tech-savvy population, rich natural resources and stable democratic system as key factors drawing investors to the country.
Transnational security threats demand intelligence sharing, coordinated action and stronger ties between governments, security bodies and communities across Africa, the governor stressed. He called for enhanced regional and continental cooperation to confront emerging security challenges while advancing peace, stability and shared prosperity.
Security, inclusive leadership and people-centred governance form the bedrock of sustainable economic development, Eno told delegates at the Sir Dawda Jawara International Conference Centre in Banjul, The Gambia. Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi represented him at the event where he received the African Leader in People-Centric Governance Award.
The governor dedicated the honour to residents of Akwa Ibom State, calling it a testament to the joint efforts of government officials, security agencies and citizens in creating a safe, secure and prosperous society. "Governance must transcend political leadership to genuinely improve citizens' living standards," he said.
Speaking before African leaders, diplomats, defence chiefs, security specialists, policymakers and development partners, Eno argued that good governance ultimately rests on its impact on the welfare and wellbeing of ordinary people. He used the platform to showcase his administration's achievements under the ARISE Agenda.
His government had built more than 1,346 kilometres of roads and bridges, Eno disclosed. The administration also established the Ibom Model Farm, rolled out the Tree Crop Revolution initiative, and commissioned a 350-bed Ibom International Hospital.
Healthcare improvements included enrolling over 300,000 residents in the State Health Insurance Scheme, the governor noted. His administration had also started building more than 455 solar-powered Compassionate Homes for vulnerable citizens.
Strategic investment and tourism projects underway include the ARISE Palm Resort, an International Convention Centre and a remodelled Ibom International Hotel, Eno highlighted. Regional operations of Ibom Air are expanding, and work continues on the Ibom Deep Seaport project.
"From land through our extensive road network, to air through Ibom Air, and to sea through the Ibom Deep Seaport, Akwa Ibom is ready to partner with the world," he declared. The three transport corridors position the state as a major economic hub, he suggested.
On security, Eno's administration created a dedicated Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways headed by a retired military officer. The move deepens collaboration with conventional security agencies through intelligence work, technology use and grassroots participation.
The Ibom Community Watch programme has been established as part of this security architecture. His government integrated 2,272 gazetted village security groups into broader security operations across the state.
