A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Taminu Turaki has celebrated a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja clearing former President Goodluck Jonathan to run in 2027.
Ini Ememobong, the factional party's national publicity secretary, released a statement backing the court's decision. He argued the ruling aligned with both law and reason.
According to Ememobong, laws cannot work retroactively or retrospectively. He insisted the original lawsuit amounted to gross abuse of court procedures and needless distraction.
The court imposed costs against the plaintiff in the case. Ememobong welcomed this penalty, saying it should discourage others from attempting similar tactics.
He described those filing such suits as "busybodies and irritants" being used by democracy's enemies. The statement criticized their role in derailing the nation's democratic process.
Jonathan's path to the presidency now faces no legal obstacles, Ememobong noted. His party had already granted Jonathan a screening waiver ahead of the contest.
Party primaries to select all candidates are scheduled for May 28, 2026. This timeline gives Jonathan and other aspirants months to prepare.
