Over 15 Killed, Residents Flee as Herdsmen Attack Benue Communities

Armed herdsmen have killed more than 15 people in several communities in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attacks, which started on Tuesday, have left several others injured and many missing.

The affected communities include Akpete, Ugbobi, Ijaha, Edikwu Oji, and Iyanpu.

The armed men not only killed residents but also destroyed homes and farm produce in the communities.

A youth leader from one of the affected communities reported that the attacks have been ongoing since Tuesday, with the most recent attacks occurring in Ediku Oji and Akpete on Wednesday.

National Chairman of Apa Development Association, Mr. Eche Akpoko, described the situation as worse than the previous year, stating that the attackers have no regard for children and women.

He also mentioned that residents are unable to go to their farms due to the fear of being attacked.

Abu Umoru, the lawmaker representing Apa state constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, lamented the unending attacks in Apa council.

He stated that more than 95 percent of a section of the community is displaced, with entire communities deserted. He also mentioned that the casualty is very high, with no fewer than five people being killed on a daily basis.

The attacks have taken a toll on the mental health of the residents, with Umoru himself seeking medical attention due to the stress caused by the killings.

Despite multiple motions being moved by representatives at the National Assembly, the situation remains dire.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, stated that she does not have any reports on the attacks.
