Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) bill into law, emphasizing that it will accelerate the region’s growth and ensure fairness in national development.
Omo-Agege praised President Tinubu for his commitment to equity, particularly in recognizing that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) serves a broader mandate beyond the South-South.
The former DSP in a statement signed by Sunny Areh, Media Adviser to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, noted that establishing the SSDC ensures that non-oil-producing areas within the region are not excluded from national development efforts.
“In truth, I am not surprised that President Tinubu dismissed attempts to sideline the SSDC bill. His decision reflects his dedication to fairness and his unwavering commitment to the development of the Niger Delta and the South-South region as a whole,” Omo-Agege stated.
The SSDC law, signed on March 25, 2025, alongside the South-West Development Commission (SWDC) bill, is expected to complement the NDDC’s role while fostering inclusive development across the geopolitical zones.
“With all zones now having their own development commissions, a healthy competitive spirit will drive innovation and accelerate progress nationwide. In a few years, this strategic initiative will yield significant benefits as each commission works to outperform the others,” Omo-Agege added.
As Deputy Senate President in the 9th Assembly, Omo-Agege played a pivotal role in passing the North East Development Commission (NEDC) bill to support the region’s recovery from insurgency. He subsequently championed the establishment of similar agencies for other geopolitical zones, including the North West, South East, and North Central Development Commissions.
