Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered a commanding display to win gold in the women's heavyweight para powerlifting competition at Glasgow 2026. She lifted 175kg to earn 134.8 points and set a new world record in the process.
Her teammate Rita Ferdinand claimed silver with a lift of 158kg, also breaking the previous world record. The pair's dominance gave Nigeria a dominant one-two finish at the Games.
Australia's Hani Watson took bronze with a lift of 111.5kg. The result marked Nigeria's second one-two sweep of the day in para powerlifting.
Earlier, Esther Nworgu and Esther Oyema had secured gold and silver in the women's lightweight event. Nworgu had also broken the world record in her competition.
Roland Ezuruike opened Nigeria's medal account on the opening day, winning silver in the men's lightweight category. The powerlifter's achievement marked the start of what's shaping up as a strong Games for the Nigerian para powerlifting contingent.
