Yeye Olufunke Daniel, former first lady of Ogun State, is grieving the death of her mother, Chief Mrs. Sabainah Ibironke Opawole.
The 93-year-old died peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, after a brief spell of illness.
Born on April 23, 1933, Opawole descended from Princess Mariam Ladigbolu of the Ladigbolu family of the Oyo Kingdom and the late Reverend O. Osoba of Olodo Village, Abeokuta.
She was a lifelong Baptist Church member who held fast to her Christian convictions throughout her life.
Those who knew her praised her humility, faith, and dedication to family values. Opawole leaves behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with Daniel married to Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former Ogun governor and current senator for Ogun East.
The family released a statement confirming her passing and thanking God for her long, purposeful life. "Our beloved mother lived a long, fulfilled and exemplary life dedicated to God, her family and humanity," the statement read.
The family said they drew comfort from the principles their mother instilled in everyone around her. They also noted the lasting imprint her existence had made on those who encountered her.
In their statement, the family asked for prayers and compassion during the mourning period. "We appreciate the outpouring of love, prayers and support from friends, associates and well-wishers.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course," they said.
Since news of her death became public, tributes have flowed in from across Ogun State and beyond. Political figures, community leaders, family friends, and well-wishers have remembered Opawole as dignified, graceful, strong, and deeply faithful.
