Ohanaeze Ndigbo has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu's bid for re-election in 2027. The apex Igbo socio-cultural group said backing Tinubu serves the collective interests of the Igbo nation.
In a carefully considered move, Ohanaeze aims to secure the vice presidency slot for 2027 under the All Progressives Congress. Leaders hope this strategy will also bring more federal projects to the South-East region.
The position reflects agreements reached in January 2026. Ohanaeze joined forces with South-East governors, former governors, and serving ministers from the region on the matter.
Critically, Ohanaeze has instructed no Igbo candidate—including Peter Obi—to contest against Tinubu next year. Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and National Spokesperson Chief Thompson Ohia released the statement on Sunday.
According to the group, this measured approach allows the federal government to finish infrastructure work in the region. It also creates room for creating additional states and rolling out pro-South-East economic policies.
Ohanaeze congratulated Tinubu on winning the APC presidential primary in 2026. It also praised South-East governors who secured re-election bids for 2027.
Rivers State's Kingsley O. Chinda drew special praise for clinching the APC gubernatorial nomination.
His victory was seen as significant for the region's political fortunes.
Behind closed doors, Ohanaeze has begun talks with top government officials about the 2031 arrangements. Negotiators want to guarantee an Igbo vice president once Tinubu's second term concludes.
Two names stand out as potential candidates. Senator Dave Nweze Umahi and Chimaroke Nnamani are being considered as leaders of "exceptional calibre."
For this plan to work, Ohanaeze stressed that Igbos must mobilize fully for Tinubu in 2027. Only overwhelming support from the region, the group believes, can secure real gains for the South-East going forward.
