Ogun State Government Promises Transparency in N5 Billion Palliative Distribution

The Ogun State Government has assured residents of its commitment to a transparent distribution of the N5 billion palliative initiative aimed at cushioning the effects of the current socio-economic hardship in the state.

The assurance came from the State Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, during a media interaction.

The government’s decision to provide the N5 billion palliative in all sectors of the state economy was made to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on residents.

However, some quarters, particularly students, have raised concerns about the disbursement process, alleging attempts by some government officials to defraud and prevent them from receiving their share of the relief funds.

Addressing these concerns, Okubadejo emphasized that the government is taking necessary measures to ensure transparency in the distribution of the palliatives.

He stated that a committee has been set up to involve all relevant stakeholders and address any issues that may arise during the process.

The Commissioner acknowledged that the current list of beneficiaries is being used to start the program immediately and that a lot of validation is being done in the register.

He also assured that the use of Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identification Number (NIN) will ensure proper identification and transparency in the disbursement process.

In addition to addressing concerns about the N5 billion palliative distribution, Okubadejo highlighted the achievements of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration in the last five years.

He pointed out that the establishment of six additional economic development clusters has positioned the state as an industrial capital, with the highest number of free trade zones in Nigeria and numerous industrial estates.

The government has also initiated the Economic Development Clusters and partnered with the private sector to develop essential infrastructure, reduce costs, and provide companies with comprehensive support in providing power, water, and security.

Furthermore, the state has undergone significant digital transformation, simplifying transactions for residents and businesses through initiatives such as the digitalization of business premises permits and Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), as well as holistic reforms in land processes to promote transparency and streamline transactions, thereby attracting investments into the state.

As a result of these efforts, the state’s Internally Generated Revenue has soared from 50 billion in 2020 to over 130 billion in 2023.

The Ogun State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists organized the media interaction to hold people in power accountable and clarify any ambiguities in government policies.

The state government’s commitment to transparency and fairness in the N5 billion palliative distribution process demonstrates their dedication to ensuring that the relief funds reach those who need them most.
