Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory have stopped a kidnapping attempt in Byazhin community. Officers recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during the operation.
The Anti-Kidnapping unit moved in around 12:34 a.m. on Thursday based on credible intelligence reports. Acting on tip-offs, they targeted the Redeemed Church area near Paze Hills in Bwari Area Council.
CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, the FCT police commissioner, revealed the details to journalists on Friday. He explained how officers arrived to find armed suspects forcing their way into a residential home.
The criminal elements opened fire immediately upon spotting the police team. A fierce exchange of gunfire erupted between both sides.
The firefight lasted more than thirty minutes, according to Sanusi. The suspects, overwhelmed by superior firepower, fled into nearby bushes with varying gunshot wounds.
Mr. and Mrs. Samson — the intended victims — remained unharmed throughout the ordeal.
They were swiftly evacuated to safety.
Both were taken to General Hospital, Gwarinpa, for medical evaluation and trauma counseling. Hospital staff placed them under protective custody afterward.
Officers recovered one AK-47 rifle from the scene. They also seized a magazine and seven rounds of live ammunition.
Sanusi commended the bravery displayed by his operatives during the operation. He praised their professionalism and swift response to the emergency.
The police chief pledged renewed commitment to protecting lives and property across the territory. He noted the command's determination to tackle criminal elements head-on.
Enhanced patrols have been deployed to the area moving forward. Security officials will maintain heightened vigilance in Byazhin and surrounding neighborhoods.
Sanusi urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious activities immediately. He called on communities to partner with security agencies for effective crime prevention.
Intelligence remains crucial to police operations in the FCT. Residents who share timely information help officers prevent crimes before they happen.
