Police in Benue State are hunting down the killers of a top cattle herders' leader. Ardo Rabo Mohammed, who headed the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the state, was gunned down on Friday afternoon.

The attack happened along the Okwudu-Ogoli road in Otukpo. Mohammed and his companion, Yakubu Isah, were returning from a security meeting in Ohimini LGA when gunmen opened fire.

Tactical and intelligence teams have been deployed to track the attackers. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the manhunt is underway.

CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, the Police Commissioner, called the shooting a "senseless and criminal act." He said it threatens the security progress Benue has been making.

Nwadiogbu promised to leave no stone unturned in catching those responsible. He assured the public that arrests and prosecutions would follow.

The commissioner urged residents to stay calm during the investigation. He warned against spreading rumors that could spark more violence.

Nwadiogbu also called for credible information from the public to help solve the case. Anyone with knowledge of the attack should contact authorities immediately.

Governor Hyacinth Alia also condemned the killing in strong terms. He described it as an attack on the peace efforts happening across Benue.

According to the governor's office, the victim was identified as Alhaji Ardo Risku. The killing represents a setback for reconciliation work in the state.

Alia has ordered security agencies to investigate thoroughly and transparently. He wants the perpetrators found and prosecuted without any delay.

The governor also directed security to do more to protect community leaders. These leaders are involved in peace-building and security work across the state.

Alia told residents to remain law-abiding and peaceful. He warned that any action disrupting the fragile peace won't be tolerated.

He expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and the MACBAN community. His administration remains committed to keeping Benue safe for everyone.
