The Delta State Government has said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s impressive strides in infrastructure and human capital development are unsettling the opposition in the state.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, made this known during a radio programme monitored in Asaba, the state capital.
Aniagwu noted that while the opposition was free to play politics, the Oborevwori administration remained focused on governance and delivering on the governor’s MORE agenda.
“The opposition can play politics, but we are focused on governance,” Aniagwu stated. “When the time comes for politics, we will let them know that our politics is about results, and our projects will speak for us.”
He added that Oborevwori’s track record was already rattling his critics.
“I know that Governor Oborevwori has a lot to showcase in his report card, and it is already unsettling the opposition in the state. They want to drag us into politics too early, but we will respond with more projects,” he said.
“When they talk, we show them projects because projects are our report card. In 2022 and 2023, we told you they would disappear after the election. That they are resurfacing today does not mean they will be sustainable.”
Aniagwu assured that Governor Oborevwori’s administration would be judged by its ability to fulfill campaign promises.
“To assess Governor Oborevwori, look at the work he has done compared to the promises he made. He pledged to complete ongoing projects and initiate new ones, and that is exactly what he is doing,” he said.
“For those living in Uvwie, Warri, and its environs, you will agree that the skyline has changed with the flyover bridges in that corridor. We are not playing politics now; we are focused on governance that delivers value to Deltans.”
On the progress of projects across the state, Aniagwu said the administration was committed to connectivity and even development.
"We inherited up to 370 road projects across the state, and we are running with them while also introducing new ones,” he said.
He acknowledged that inflation, particularly the rise in construction material prices following the removal of fuel subsidies, had affected the pace of some projects.
“When Oborevwori took over, there was a spiral in the prices of construction materials due to subsidy removal. This significantly impacted contractors, necessitating upward reviews of project costs to ensure the state is not shortchanged.”
He also emphasized that the governor’s commitment to balanced development was evident in ongoing projects across the state.
“Just as Oborevwori is developing the Warri axis, he is also working on several road projects within the Asaba Capital Territory,” Aniagwu noted.
On security, he urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing, stressing that many crimes were committed by individuals who lacked proper home training.
“To have a sustainable society, parents must instill the right values in their children,” he said.
He also stressed the need to re-engineer the educational curriculum to equip graduates with technical skills, adding that the administration was making significant investments in education.
“Over 205,000 beneficiaries have been empowered through the Delta Cares Programme, creating more employers rather than job seekers,” he said.
Aniagwu further commended Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to education, highlighting the ongoing renovation of schools across the state.
