NYSC DG says employers neglect corps members’ welfare

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has accused some employers of undermining the welfare and security of corps members posted to their establishments. He said that some employers were guilty of corps rejection, underutilization, poor working environment, and inadequate provision of accommodation and transport allowance for corps members.

Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, gave this note at the 2023 Corps Employer’s Workshop that took place at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Ede, Osun State, and was represented by Ella Williams, the Deputy Director of Corps Development, South West. He said that most of the employers who requested that corps members work for them did not provide decent accommodation for them. He also said that some employers and corps members were involved in truancy, which endangered their lives. He cited some examples of corps members who died in accidents while travelling without permission. He said that some employers even shared part of the allowance that the Federal Government gave to the corps members to allow them to leave their duty posts.

The state coordinator of the NYSC, Ndoma Agbor Obim, welcomed the participants to the workshop, which had the theme ‘Optimising the productivity of corp members through enhanced welfare and security during the service year’. He said that the workshop was aimed at connecting talented corporate members with employers who shared the NYSC vision of promoting personal and professional growth.
