Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft and representative of Delta North, met with Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa on Tuesday to tackle the escalating crisis of crude oil theft.
Sharing details on X, Senator Nwoko described crude oil theft as a major threat to national security and economic stability, stressing the urgency of decisive action to curb the menace.
Discussions centered on strengthening intelligence-sharing, enhancing surveillance operations, and fostering inter-agency collaboration. The senator emphasized that an effective strategy is essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s oil sector and restoring investor confidence.
"Crude oil theft drains billions from our economy, discourages investment, and hampers national development," Nwoko stated. "Tackling this issue requires stronger policies, advanced security measures, and accountability at all levels."
He reiterated that the committee’s efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at securing natural resources, ensuring economic stability, and fostering sustainable growth.
"Protecting our crude oil reserves is not just about revenue—it’s about securing Nigeria’s future," he added.
Senator Nwoko commended the commitment of his fellow committee members and acknowledged the military’s role in safeguarding national resources. He reaffirmed the Senate’s determination to implement lasting reforms and end illicit activities threatening the nation’s progress.
"The fight against crude oil theft is a shared responsibility. Together, we will secure a better future," he said.
