Arising from her monthly congress held at the Labour House Asaba, the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, in a communique issued and signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu and the Secretary, Comrade Churchill Oyewe, the union called on the federal government to urgently implement N65,500:00 minimum wage the minister of labour and productivity promised the NLC during negotiations earlier this year.
The communique stated that further delay to the implementation of the new minimum wage signals the federal government uncommittement to the betterment of her citizens.
The congress viewed the continued stay of the N18,000 minimum wage as the perpetration of poverty in the country, adding that further delay and politizing of the increment of the minimum wage to N65,500 as requested by labour would be the height of insensitivity by the leadership of the country.
It urged the federal government to implement the expected new minimum wage by the end of the third quarter of this year as agreed with labour to alleviate the suffering of workers and the Nigerian people.
The congress equally called on the country’s leadership to put an end to the incessant killings by herdsmen and fast tract the prosecution of arrested killer herdsmen to act as deterrent to others as the cry of Nigerians has gotten to alarming rate.
