NUJ Calls for Immediate Release of Kidnapped Channels TV Reporter

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded the immediate release of Joshua Rogers, a Channels TV reporter who was abducted from his residence in Rumuosi, Port-Harcourt on Thursday night.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity faced by journalists and media practitioners in the country.

Dr. Chris Iziguzo, the NUJ President, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing that journalists are increasingly becoming targets of criminal activities.

He called on the government of Rivers and relevant security agencies to take immediate and effective measures to secure Rogers’ safe and prompt release.

The kidnappers intercepted Rogers as he returned from an official assignment at the Government House around 9:00 pm and forcefully took him away in a Channels Television-branded vehicle.

They later contacted his wife, demanding a ransom of N30 million for his release.

The NUJ president stressed the need for concerted action to address the rising threats against journalists across Nigeria.

He underscored the critical role of journalists in informing the public and emphasized the importance of ensuring their safety and well-being during this time.

The NUJ stands in solidarity with Rogers, his family, and Channels TV, urging for swift and effective measures to be taken to secure his freedom.

The union has called on the government and security agencies to prioritize efforts towards the safe release of Rogers, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate action.

As the situation continues to unfold, the NUJ remains committed to advocating for the well-being and safety of journalists and media practitioners in Nigeria, demanding that the government takes necessary measures to ensure their protection and prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
