The National Sports Commission has boosted performance bonuses for Nigerian athletes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to keep them sharp and motivated. NSC chairman Shehu Dikko announced the enhanced reward structure this week.
Gold medalists will now pocket $10,000 total — $5,000 handed over instantly and another $5,000 transferred to their accounts. Silver medalists receive $5,000, split between $2,000 cash on the spot and $3,000 via bank transfer.
Bronze medalists get $3,000, with $1,000 paid immediately and $2,000 deposited later. Dikko confirmed that three gold medalists from Friday had already collected $10,000 each, correcting earlier reports that listed $8,000.
The two gold medalists from Saturday and the silver medalists have since received their instant cash payments of $5,000 and $2,000 respectively. Coaches whose athletes win gold will take home $5,000 as incentive.
Dikko revealed that competing athletes draw a daily allowance of $200 while coaches receive $250 per day. Additional special bonuses kick in under particular circumstances, he noted.
He cited wrestler Rilwan Idris as an example, explaining that the commission gave him an on-the-spot cash reward to push him from a potential bronze finish toward gold. The NSC says the improved welfare package demonstrates its commitment to fully backing Team Nigeria throughout the Glasgow games.
