Northern Caucus of Labour Party Demands National Chairmanship Position

The Northern Caucus of the party has demanded that the national chairmanship position be given to a candidate from the North.

This development follows the controversial national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, which saw the reelection of Julius Abure as the LP’s national chairman, a move that has been challenged by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The Northern Caucus, led by its convener Hussaini Saraki, has expressed the need for unity and inclusivity within the party, emphasizing that the leadership should be zoned to the North for fairness and representation.

The caucus has also highlighted the importance of moving past factional disputes and working towards a united Labour Party.

The NLC has deemed the recent national convention and its outcome as unlawful, leading to the establishment of a transition committee to manage the party’s operations until a new convention can be organized.

The Northern Caucus, however, maintains that the party is now united and that any factions, such as the so-called Apapa faction or Abure faction, no longer exist.

The controversy surrounding the national chairmanship position has intensified as the Northern Caucus has explicitly stated that it will not accept any candidate from the South for the role.

This stance has further polarized the party, with the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, suggesting that the party has moved beyond the issue of the national chairman.

The Labour Party has been grappling with internal disputes and factional challenges, which have raised concerns about its ability to function effectively as a political force in Nigeria.

The ongoing dispute over the national chairmanship position and the zoning of leadership roles will be critical in determining the future direction of the party and its ability to address the needs and aspirations of its members and supporters.

As the Labour Party navigates these challenges, it will be crucial for the party leadership and its members to prioritize unity, inclusivity, and fairness in order to overcome the current crisis and work towards a more cohesive and effective political organization.
