NLC Sacks Abure-led NWC, Establishes Transition Committee for LP

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the dissolution of the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) and the formation of a transition committee to manage the party’s affairs in the interim.

This decision was reached during a political commission stakeholders meeting in Abuja on April 9, 2024.

The NLC expressed its disapproval of the March 27 National Convention, which had re-elected Abure as chairman, citing a lack of confidence in the process.

The Congress resolved to establish a transition committee, under the leadership of the NLC political commission, to oversee the party’s operations until an all-inclusive and expansive national convention can be conducted.

The transition committee has been tasked with managing the Labour Party’s assets, conducting a forensic audit of all cases of fraud, impersonation, and forgery of government documents, and ensuring the prosecution of those found guilty.

The NLC emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Labour Party, stating that the actions of a few dishonourable characters had tarnished the party’s reputation.

To ensure a more inclusive and transparent process, the transition committee is expected to facilitate the revalidation of current members, the registration of new members, and the issuance of new membership cards.

The goal is to achieve a total membership strength of 10 million.

The NLC has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to take note of these developments within the Labour Party.

The Labour Party, as envisioned by the NLC, is a party for all Nigerians, transcending ethnic, religious, regional, social, and economic differences.

This recent move by the NLC underscores the commitment to uphold the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and accountability within the Labour Party, as it seeks to move forward and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s political landscape.
