Nigeria’s Zungeru Hydropower Plant at Testing Stage: Minister

Nigeria’s 700 megawatts Zungeru hydropower plant, the country’s largest hydroelectric project, is currently at the testing stage, as confirmed by Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power.

In a recent document released, the minister addressed industry questions regarding the status of the $1.3 billion project, which is located in Niger state.

Adelabu emphasized that the Zungeru power complex, expected to generate 2.64 billion kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity annually, has been connected to the national grid, contrary to some claims.

He further stated that the facility has been completed and its concession process concluded.

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) has been appointed as the preferred bidder for the concession of the Zungeru power plant.

The company, which is also responsible for the operation of the Kainji and Jabba hydroelectric power plants, is currently working with the Chinese consultants who built the facility to ensure a smooth technical handover.

The testing stage of the Zungeru hydropower plant has commenced, with power generation starting on the day of the announcement.

After a one or two week testing period, the plant is expected to begin full production.

The minister assured that the power plant is capable of evacuating power and is connected to the national grid, dismissing claims to the contrary.

The successful completion and operation of the Zungeru hydropower plant is a significant milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector, as it aims to increase the country’s domestic energy consumption and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources of power.

The project demonstrates the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy solutions and improving the country’s infrastructure.

As Nigeria continues to develop its renewable energy resources, projects like the Zungeru hydropower plant will play a crucial role in meeting the nation’s growing electricity demands and supporting its economic growth.
