Nigerian Passport Applications Surge 50% as “Japa” Trend Drives Youth to Seek Better Opportunities

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has reported a 50% surge in passport applications in the first two weeks of January 2024.

This significant increase is attributed to the growing trend of “Japa,” a term used to describe the mass emigration of young and skilled Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad.

The new automated passport application system, introduced to streamline the process and reduce human interface, has been met with mixed reactions.

While it has improved efficiency, with a 50% approval rate, some applicants have expressed skepticism due to occasional glitches and delays.

Despite these challenges, the “Japa” phenomenon continues to gain momentum. The term, which means “to flee” in the Yoruba language, has become a popular slang among Nigerian youth.

It represents their desire to escape the country’s economic difficulties and search for greener pastures in Europe and other parts of the world.

The recent EndSars national youth protests in October 2023 and the subsequent Toll Gate Massacre have been argued to have influenced the massive outmigration of Nigerians.

The youth-led protests against police brutality and corruption have led many to believe that the grass may be greener on the other side.

With over 32,000 passport applications in just two weeks, the trend is clear: more and more Nigerians are seeking opportunities outside their country.

The reasons for this exodus are numerous, including high poverty levels, rising unemployment, and a struggling economy.

The Nigerian government has yet to address this issue adequately, leaving many to wonder if the “Japa” trend will continue to rise in the coming months.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is certain: the desire for a better life and the search for greener pastures will continue to drive many young Nigerians to seek their fortunes elsewhere.
