Nigerian Lawmakers Urged to Establish Sexual Offences Courts Nationwide

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on lawmakers at both national and state levels to prioritize the establishment of sexual offences courts across Nigeria.

This appeal comes in response to the growing menace of sexual abuse in the country, with Ike suggesting that the courts be modeled after successful initiatives in Lagos and other regions.

During the unveiling of a book titled “Tears from the Grave,” written by Lemmy Ugbegbe, another journalist and organized by the Men Against Rape Foundation, Ike commended the foundation and the organizers for their efforts in raising awareness about sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

She highlighted the alarming statistics on sexual abuse in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for comprehensive measures to address the issue.

According to a recent survey, 31.4% of sexually active adolescent females and 5.7% of males experienced forced sex (rape) at sexual initiation.

The normalization of sexual violence has led to increased physical and psychological anguish for victims, with some perpetrators even committing murder after the heinous acts.

Despite existing legislation imposing severe penalties for SGBV offenses, prosecution rates remain low, partly due to the fear of stigma and the arduous legal process that discourages victims from reporting their cases.

The absence of a government-funded compensation scheme for victims of sexual and violent crimes in Nigeria further compounds the issue.

Ike praised the Men Against Rape Foundation for its advocacy efforts and commitment to ensuring that SGBV victims receive justice and support.

She also expressed deep appreciation for the work of Mr. Lemmy Ugegbe and the foundation in raising awareness and pursuing justice for victims.

The establishment of sexual offences courts across Nigeria would not only provide a specialized and dedicated platform for the swift and effective prosecution of SGBV cases but also offer victims a supportive and trauma-informed environment to seek justice.

The call for such courts reflects the urgent need for comprehensive and systemic action against sexual abuse in the country.
