Nigeria Leads Africa in Climate Research with Cosmic Ray Muon Detector

Nigeria has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first African country to acquire a cosmic ray muon detector.
This significant development was announced by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and marks a new era in the study of climate and atmospheric changes in the region.
Prof. Babatunde Rabiu, Director of the UN- African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (UN-ARCSSTEE), a research and development arm of NASRDA, disclosed this information at a symposium in Abuja on May 3, 2024.
The symposium, focused on Cosmic Rays and Space Weather, was organized in collaboration with Georgia State University (GSU), USA.
The cosmic ray muon detector, designed and built by GSU's Physics and Astronomy Department, is a cutting-edge tool that will aid in the monitoring of cosmic rays and space weather.
Prof. Rabiu emphasized the importance of this technology in predicting weather patterns and studying space weather, particularly in the context of climate change.
"Cosmic rays are everywhere and play a crucial role in understanding our climate system," said Prof. Rabiu.
"With the measurements we'll be able to take with the muon detector, we hope to have an effective predictability of our climate system."
Prof. He Xiaochun of GSU explained that cosmic ray radiation, largely consisting of proton particles, originates in deep space and produces cosmic ray showers in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
These particles can be measured at the Earth's surface to decode the state of space and Earth weather.
Dr. Bonaventure Okere, Director of the Centre for Basic Space Science and Astronomy, highlighted the significance of this development for astronomy studies and the enhancement of research and development in that field.
This new cosmic ray muon detector will not only aid in the understanding of climate change but also provide valuable information for stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding the reduction of gas emissions and the maintenance of clean air for sustainable human development.
As Nigeria takes the lead in Africa's efforts to combat climate change and study space weather, the acquisition of the cosmic ray muon detector marks a significant step forward in the quest for a deeper understanding of our planet's climate system and the impact of cosmic radiation.
