A passenger trailer collided with a tanker on Sunday in Niger State's Agaie Local Government Area. The crash claimed five lives and left eight people seriously injured.

Hussaini Guregi, NEMA's desk officer in Agaie, confirmed the incident to reporters. He noted that the trailer was packed with roughly 40 passengers heading to Shagamu, Ogun State from Gusau, Zamfara State.

All five fatalities occurred at the scene immediately after impact. Emergency responders transported the injured victims to Agaie General Hospital for urgent treatment.

According to Guregi, a disabled tanker abandoned on the roadway triggered the disaster. When the trailer driver swerved to avoid it, he lost control of the vehicle.

"As the passenger trailer attempted to dodge the stationary tanker, the driver couldn't maintain control," Guregi explained. "This loss of control led directly to the crash."

Medical staff at Agaie General Hospital received the injured for treatment. Officials have since transferred the five bodies to the hospital's mortuary facility.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. They're examining factors that contributed to the tanker being left unattended on the highway.
