In order to protect the project in the Niger Delta region, youths of the area have issued a stern warning to critics, including the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to refrain from discouraging the Federal Government from completing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The project, initiated by the President Bola Tinubu administration, has been hailed as a landmark infrastructure development that would bring both political and economic benefits to the Niger Delta region.
The statement, issued by the Coordinator of 21st Century Youths of Niger Delta and Agitators with Conscience, Izon Ebi, was shared on X by Tinubu's special adviser, Bayo Onanuga, on May 3, 2024.
The group praised the Tinubu administration for approving the highway, which will traverse the coastlines of the Niger Delta, describing it as a masterstroke that will bring about an economic boom and a tourism renaissance in the region.
The warning comes in response to criticism from Obi and others, who have expressed their opposition to the project.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has accused Obi of inciting Igbos against the Tinubu government.
Despite the criticism, the Nigerian Federal Government has stated that the highway will cost N2.8 trillion upon completion.
The Niger Delta youths have made it clear that they fully support the President's initiative and have sent a clear warning to those who oppose the project to back off.
