NIGCOMSAT Launches Phase One of 774 Local Government Internet Connectivity Project

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd has commenced the VSAT installation project to provide internet connectivity to 579 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nigeria via satellite coverage.

Leveraging the Ku-band network asset of NigComSat-1R, this ambitious project aims to bring internet access to every corner of the country, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for efficient public service at the local government level.

Phase one of the project is already underway and will cover 45 local government offices across eight states in Nigeria, including Borno, Cross River, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

The portable inverter system with solar panels, providing uninterrupted power using green energy solutions, has been delivered, and the installation team has started the project in Kabba-Bunu of Kogi state on March 5, 2024.

In addition to the initial five LGAs allocated to Kogi state in the first phase, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has generously added five more local government areas, increasing the total number of LGAs from 40 to 45.

The first five local government areas to be covered are Kabba/Bunu, Lokoja, Okehi, Bassa, and Okene, while the additional five local government areas approved by the Minister are Adavi, Ajaokuta, Kogi, Mopamuro, and Dekina.

NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, Mrs Nkechi Jane Egerton-Idehen, stated that this project is a significant step in achieving President Tinubu’s mandate to deliver efficient public service to Nigerians at the local government level.

The initiative aligns with the ministry’s strategic blueprint and demonstrates the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering sustainable development.

The successful implementation of this project will not only enhance connectivity in the local government areas but also contribute to the overall growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

By providing internet access to previously underserved regions, the project has the potential to create new opportunities for businesses, education, and social services, ultimately improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

As the project progresses, the government’s commitment to expanding internet connectivity and digital inclusion will undoubtedly pave the way for a more connected and prosperous Nigeria.
