New Pro-Democracy Group Proposes 8-Point Plan to Address Hardship and Political Instability in Nigeria

A new pro-democracy group, the Nigeria Demand Movement (NDM), has called on the federal and state governments to implement an eight-point plan to address the growing political instability and economic hardship in Nigeria.

The group’s proposals come in response to widespread hunger, inflation, and economic distress that have led to increased anger and frustration among the Nigerian population.

The NDM, led by its National Convener, Comrade Tony Le Moin, has sent correspondences to the Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and other leaders, urging them to take immediate action to address the country’s challenges.

The group has also reached out to prominent organizations and activists, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and renowned Civil Society Organizations.

The NDM’s eight-point plan includes the following measures:

End corruption: Corruption is a major factor contributing to Nigeria’s economic woes and must be addressed to improve the country’s financial stability.

End insecurity: The government must take decisive action to combat the growing insecurity in Nigeria, which is causing widespread suffering and destruction.

End mass hunger: The government should implement policies to address the issue of hunger-induced deaths and suicides, as well as provide support to those suffering from food insecurity.

Exit foreign debts: Nigeria’s mounting foreign debts are a major obstacle to its economic recovery and must be addressed to ensure a stable financial future.

Increase the minimum wage for police and military forces: To boost morale and improve the fight against insecurity, the government should raise the minimum wage for security personnel to N250,000.

Cut university and higher education fees by half: The high cost of education is a significant burden for students and their families, and reducing fees will help alleviate this financial strain.

Pay local government allocations directly to local government areas: This will promote grassroots development and ensure that funds are used for the benefit of local communities.

Amend the Nigeria Constitution to ensure the appointment of non-partisan, integrity-certified individuals to the Independent National Electoral Commission and State Electoral Commissions. This will create a more transparent and accountable electoral system, leading to the development of a new generation of political leaders who understand their responsibility to the electorate.

The NDM believes that implementing these measures will help to alleviate the political instability and economic hardship in Nigeria, and urges the government to act quickly to address these pressing issues.
