NDPC Partners with SMEDAN and NLRC to Strengthen Data Protection for Nigerian SMEs and the Gaming Sector

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to promote data protection within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) ecosystem and the gaming sector.

The MoU with SMEDAN aims to educate approximately 40 million SMEs on adopting appropriate technical and organisational measures towards safeguarding data privacy.

This collaboration will establish a working group to focus on capacity building in data protection and promote the trusted use of data for short, medium, and long-term growth.

National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, expressed optimism about the implementation of the memoranda with the two strategic agencies and assured stakeholders that data protection will guarantee growth in the SME sector.

The MoU with the NLRC seeks to bolster data protection initiatives in the gaming sector, with a focus on protecting the personal data of approximately 60 million data subjects.

The NDPC and NLRC will collaborate on training their staff and stakeholders on data protection principles to foster a culture of compliance.

Director General of SMEDAN, Mr Charles Odii, expressed appreciation for NDPC’s readiness to collaborate, emphasising the significance of data protection and complying with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, in preparing for international business.

Director General of NLRC, Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila, also expressed gratitude to the NDPC for their ongoing work and highlighted the importance of safeguarding personal data within the gaming ecosystem.

The NDPC’s collaboration with SMEDAN and NLRC is a significant step towards ensuring data protection compliance in Nigeria’s SME and gaming sectors.

This will help build trust and confidence among businesses and consumers, contributing to the overall growth and development of the Nigerian economy.
