The Nigerian Navy has arrested a suspect connected to a vehicle theft ring that stole more than 50 cars across the Federal Capital Territory. Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the director of naval information, revealed this in an operational report shared with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.
Operatives from Naval Base Abuja detained the man as he tried to leave the FCT, the captain said. The arrest forms part of a broader security drive aimed at protecting the nation's capital through intelligence-backed operations working with other security bodies.
Preliminary investigations show the suspect posed as a Nigerian Correctional Service inspector to carry out his crimes. He confessed to his role in the theft network that targeted vehicles across different parts of Abuja.
The criminal group worked beyond state lines and sold stolen cars to accomplices outside the FCT, according to Folorunsho. Security agencies are now working together to track down and arrest the other members involved.
Police at the FCT Command have taken custody of the suspect, along with evidence and items recovered from the operation. They will handle the investigation and prosecution following standard procedures between agencies.
Folorunsho emphasised the Navy's dedication to strengthening teamwork among security agencies. He said this collaboration aims to uphold national security and create a safer Nigeria for all citizens.
