NASU and SSANU Begin 7-Day Warning Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced the commencement of a 7-day warning strike, starting from Monday, March 18, 2024.

The strike comes as a result of the government’s failure to address the issue of unpaid salaries for university workers that were withheld in 2022.

The warning strike directive was issued by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU after the expiration of an ultimatum given to the government to resolve the issue.

Despite multiple notices to government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, no positive response has been received.

The strike is a result of the government’s decision to pay four months of the withheld salaries to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members, while neglecting non-teaching staff members of NASU, SSANU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The unions argue that this is an injustice and unfair treatment of their members in the university sector.

During the warning strike, all services provided by the non-teaching staff in universities and inter-university centers will be suspended, including the operation of water treatment plants and clinics.

Additionally, those involved in proposed matriculations in some universities are to stay away from any activities.

The unions have called for a comprehensive and total strike, urging their members to strictly comply with the directive.

The warning strike serves as a reminder to the government to address the demands of the non-teaching staff and ensure fair treatment in the university sector.
