The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has announced plans to begin the production of mobile phones, laptops, lithium batteries, and solar street lamps in Nigeria.
This development is part of the agency’s efforts to create national brands that can compete in the market, and it complements their existing product range, which includes solar irrigation systems, electric keke, electric motorcycles, and solar-powered cargo tricycles.
Khalil Halilu, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NASENI, made this announcement during a media briefing in Abuja.
He emphasized the agency’s commitment to domesticating technology, both capital and consumer goods, and their adoption of a fast-track approach to technology transfer and commercialization of its research and development (R&D) products.
The agency is focusing on the 3C principles of creation, collaboration, and commercialization with strategic partners in both the public and private sectors.
This approach aims to create jobs, wealth, and reduce import bills for the nation.
In response to concerns about the products’ market competitiveness, Halilu assured that the agency is supercharging its business development unit to provide better value at a cheaper price.
This strategy is crucial in Nigeria’s competitive market, and the agency is exploring avenues to make the products available in every local government of the country, as well as partnering with other government agencies and agents.
NASENI is also collaborating with the private sector, and it is currently developing the first solar mounting ramp in West Africa.
Other ongoing activities and achievements include the development of the NASENI Proposal Evaluation Portal, NASENI Growth Hacker, NASENI ERP, NASENI eProcurement, NASENI StemBox, and NASENI Innovation Hub.
These developments are part of NASENI’s broader mission to advance Nigeria’s technological capabilities and contribute to economic growth.
With the production of these new products, the agency is poised to make significant strides in the country’s technology and manufacturing sectors.
