NAPTIP Issues Warning to Nigerians on Employing Underage Housemaids, Emphasizes Fair Treatment and Legal Consequences

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has recently issued a stern warning to Nigerians who employ underage housemaids, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the law and treating domestic workers fairly.

During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, NAPTIP’s Director of Legal and Prosecution, Hassan Tahir, stated that engaging in the practice of employing underage housemaids is illegal and punishable by law.

He advised employers to ensure fair treatment of their domestic workers, including providing shared accommodations and schooling with the master’s children.

According to Section 23 of the Trafficking in Persons Act (TIP), employing a child as a domestic worker is considered unlawful, and those found guilty of such an offense can face a minimum of 6 months imprisonment, extending up to 7 years.

Tahir stressed that employers must ensure equal treatment of their domestic workers, including attending the same school as their children, eating the same food, wearing the same clothes, and being treated equally.

He warned that if employers violate the rights of their domestic workers, NAPTIP will take necessary action to ensure justice is served.

The agency’s strong stance against the exploitation of underage housemaids and the mistreatment of domestic workers is a clear message to the public that such practices will not be tolerated.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with human trafficking issues, it is crucial for the government and its agencies to enforce strict measures to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals.

The NAPTIP’s warning to Nigerians on employing underage housemaids serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the law and promoting fair treatment of domestic workers.

By doing so, the agency hopes to curb human trafficking and ensure a safer environment for all.
