A dispatch rider is dead after a horrific accident on Ilupeju Bypass in Lagos on Wednesday. An articulated trailer crushed him to death at the scene.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the tragic incident. According to their investigation, the rider had been struggling with a commercial minibus over right of way.
In the chaos, he lost control of his motorcycle. It crashed directly into the path of the moving trailer.
LASTMA's General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, told reporters that agency operatives got distress alerts around the Mushin axis. They raced to the scene immediately.
Staff began rescue operations right away. Traffic management teams also worked to prevent gridlock along the busy corridor.
Recovering the body proved difficult. Workers found the deceased trapped beneath the massive trailer and had to extract him carefully.
"We mobilized environmental health officials to evacuate the corpse," Bakare-Oki noted. Spilled cargo from the trailer had scattered across the road.
Multiple agencies worked together throughout the operation. LASTMA coordinated with emergency responders to restore order.
Officers from Ilupeju Police Division provided security backup. They stood guard as rescue workers cleared the scene.
Both vehicles involved were handed to Nigeria Police Force. They'll investigate and determine if traffic law violations occurred.
Normal traffic flow returned to the corridor after hours. The incident has renewed concern about road safety on Lagos expressways.
