Morocco reached the World Cup last 16 by defeating the Netherlands on penalties in Monterrey on Monday. The match ended 1-1 after extra time before the Atlas Lions won 3-2 from the spot.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved the hero, denying Crysencio Summerville's penalty before striker Ismael Saibari blasted home the decisive kick. Morocco now faces Canada in Houston on Saturday in the knockout round.

The Dutch thought they had victory secured when Cody Gakpo fired them ahead midway through the second half. The Liverpool forward, playing just days after his partner confirmed the death of their unborn son, sank to the ground overwhelmed with emotion as teammates rushed to embrace him.

Morocco refused to surrender, however, and forced extra time through Issa Diop's dramatic header. The defender rose unmarked to meet Chemsdine Talbi's cross in the first minute of stoppage time and level the contest.

The match in Monterrey had been a fractious affair throughout, with Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio having to manage fierce challenges from both sides. Morocco had actually created the better chances during normal play.

Early in the match, Noel al-Aynaoui glanced an Achraf Hakimi corner towards goal but Netherlands keeper Bart Verbruggen produced a superb reflex save. Verbruggen was called into action again moments later when he tipped Hakimi's powerful strike over the bar.

The intensity boiled over when Ismael Saibari escaped punishment for elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke in the face midway through the first half. The Dutch midfielder van Hecke bloodied his head in a collision but remained combative, crunching into tackles to disrupt Morocco's flow.

The Netherlands had dominated possession for large spells but struggled to create clear opportunities. Their most dangerous effort came on 44 minutes when Tottenham's Micky van de Ven unleashed a ferocious shot from the edge of the area that Bounou tipped over the bar.

Coach Ronald Koeman's substitutions changed the game's complexion after the second-half hydration break. He introduced forward Wout Weghorst, who flicked a long ball forward to send Summerville racing towards goal.

Summerville squared to Gakpo, who threw himself at the ball to find the net and seemingly secure Dutch progress. But Diop had other ideas, leaping highest to head past Verbruggen and take the contest to penalties.

Bounou's crucial save from Summerville gave Morocco the advantage they needed at 3-2 down. Saibari stepped up calmly to blast the winning penalty and send the Atlas Lions into the last 16.
