Speaking at the joint Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), Idris stressed that press freedom should not be used as a license to spread fake news, misinformation, or disinformation.
Idris highlighted the safety of journalists as a global challenge and assured that press freedom in Nigeria is largely upheld.
He noted that no journalist has been killed, jailed, or sent into exile under the Tinubu administration.
The minister also pointed out that while some past incidents may have occurred, the current administration has taken steps to address them responsibly.
The minister underscored the need for responsible journalism that prioritizes patriotism, love for the nation, and the maintenance of the country's integrity.
He emphasized that responsible reporting should foster unity, peace, and safety in society.
Idris called on journalists to use their platform to educate the public and ensure that their work contributes to the betterment of the nation.
"Press freedom is not the same thing as spreading falsehood and misinformation," Idris stated.
He reminded journalists that their responsibility extends to reporting accurately and transparently, and maintaining the sanctity of their own country.
Idris expressed the administration's desire for direct foreign investments into Nigeria and stressed that negative media reports could deter potential investors.
He urged journalists not to tear the country apart under the guise of press freedom and advised that factual, honest, and transparent reporting is essential for attracting foreign investments.
Minister Idris's remarks underscore the importance of responsible journalism in promoting a positive image of Nigeria and attracting foreign investments.
By reporting factually and truthfully, journalists can play a significant role in fostering the nation's development and growth.
