The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) has criticized a proposed Labour Party stakeholders meeting organized by the Political Commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the organizers of the event as "drama boys" and "attention seekers" in a recent statement.
Scheduled to take place on Monday in Abuja, the meeting aims to appoint a caretaker committee for the Labour Party.
However, the LP leadership has not authorized the meeting and has called on all genuine members of the party to disregard and shun the gathering.
Ifoh described the meeting as illegal, stating that it is not supported by any law in the land and its outcomes would be null and void.
He urged law enforcement agencies to intervene and prevent the gathering, which he believes may escalate into a public nuisance.
The LP leadership has accused the NLC of neglecting its responsibilities, particularly in the recent electricity tariff hike of about 300 percent, which the NLC has not responded to or called its members to protest.
The Labour Party's stance on this matter reflects its growing tensions with the NLC, as the party asserts that the NLC does not have any proprietary right over the Labour Party and therefore cannot continue to claim ownership.
This development comes as the LP continues to navigate its position in Nigerian politics and seeks to distance itself from what it considers unauthorized interference from the NLC.
