Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged politicians and election candidates to base their campaigns on issues rather than personal attacks as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. Lamido made the appeal on Saturday while hosting PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Yobe states in his hometown of Bamaina, Birnin Kudi Local Government.
He stressed that issue-focused campaigns would help rebuild national unity and drive development at a time when Nigeria faces mounting challenges. "We want to redirect and restore the culture of politics in terms of issues not personality," Lamido said.
The former governor reminded candidates that all Nigerians share a common citizenship and love for their country. "It's not about what someone did, it's about what you will give as an individual or political party, what are you going to offer Nigerians?" he asked.
Lamido identified insecurity, education, the economy and corruption as critical areas demanding attention during campaign discussions. He noted that winning elections on the strength of such pledges would yield a government truly accountable to Nigerians.
Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the PDP's governorship candidate in Gombe State and former minister of communications, praised Lamido's fatherly guidance and moral courage.
Pantami told reporters the visit aimed to seek the elder statesman's advice and backing as they navigate the political terrain ahead.
"Nigeria and Nigerians need leaders like Sule Lamido who stand with the masses and possess the courage to speak the truth to anyone, regardless of their position or status," Pantami said. The candidate hailed Lamido's steadfast commitment to principles and his willingness to champion the interests of ordinary citizens.
