The Lagos State Government has announced a renewed effort to ensure the safety of residents by launching a manhunt for the ring leaders responsible for renting out illegal apartments to tenants living under the Dolphin Bridge in Ikoyi.
The government has vowed to arrest and prosecute these individuals for violating the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Management Law.
During a recent operation, Lagos State Environmental Protection Management Law operatives discovered a major illegal housing settlement under the Dolphin Bridge, with 80 rooms partitioned into 10×10 and 10×12 spaces, as well as a container used for various illegal activities.
A total of 36 miscreants who lived under the bridge were arrested, and efforts are now being intensified to apprehend the ring leaders responsible for renting out these illegal apartments.
In addition to addressing the issue of illegal housing settlements, the Lagos State Government has also taken steps to enforce the use of pedestrian bridges, arresting 1,032 individuals for crossing the highway and failing to use pedestrian bridges.
A further 165 miscreants and squatters on pedestrian bridges across the state were also dislodged, and the bridges were cleaned up.
The government has also implemented a ban on the use, sale, and distribution of Styrofoam food containers due to health concerns and the dangers posed to the ecosystem and drainage channels.
Enforcement activities have been carried out, with over 900 kg of Styrofoam food containers confiscated and deposited at the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in Oshodi for destruction.
The Special Adviser on Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed the eviction of illegal settlers from beneath the bridge towards Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi.
In total, 23 individuals were arrested during the eviction, which is part of an ongoing clampdown on illegal structures across the metropolis.
As the Lagos State Government continues its efforts to rid the city of illegal structures and ensure the safety of residents, the crackdown on suspected underbridge tenants and the enforcement of environmental laws demonstrate the government's commitment to maintaining a safe and sustainable environment for its citizens.
