Lagos State Government Justifies Styrofoam Ban for Environmental Protection

The Lagos State government has recently reaffirmed its decision to ban the use of styrofoam in the state, citing the need to protect the environment and the wellbeing of its residents.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated this stance during the Nigeria Plastic Solutions activity launch at the Landmark Conference Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Wahab emphasized that plastic pollution is a pressing issue affecting not only the environment but also the social, health, and economic aspects of society.
He stressed the importance of collective commitment in addressing the issue and protecting the planet.
The National Council on Environment, having considered and approved the ban on styrofoam and other single-use plastics (SUPs) at its 15th and 17th sessions, has also supported Lagos State’s decision.
The commissioner highlighted the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment, particularly in a densely populated city like Lagos.
The presence of plastic waste has led to suffocation of the environment, endangered the aquatic ecosystem, and posed daily threats to human health.
He called for a multi-faceted approach involving government, businesses, communities, and individuals to address the issue.
In order to facilitate a smooth transition to a circular economy, the Lagos State government has developed a Plastic Waste Management Policy to regulate plastic waste effectively and put an end to the plastic waste menace.
Wahab emphasized the need to view plastic waste as a resource requiring responsible stewardship, rather than a disposable commodity.
The Lagos State government’s decision to ban styrofoam underscores its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
As the state continues its efforts to address plastic pollution, it serves as an example for other regions to follow in the fight against plastic waste and the promotion of a healthier, more sustainable environment.
