Labourer sentenced to 9 months imprisonment for stealing phones

By Zainab Oyekan

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Wednesday sentenced a 17-year old labourer, Abubakar Adam, to nine  months in the Correctional Centre for stealing phones.

The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Adam after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The convict was, however, given an option of N10,000 fine and ordered to pay a compensation of N100,000 to the complainant.

The judge said the punishment would deter those who would want to indulge in such acts.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Feb. 20, at the “C” Division Police Station by one Habizu Hassan, the complainant.

The prosecutor said that the convict trespassed into the complainant’s house and stole two phones valued at N115,000 and sold them to one Abdullahi Gambo at N13,000.

The offence is punishable under  the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
