Labour Party Criticizes Lawmakers for Disrespecting Party Supremacy

The Labour Party has recently criticized its members in the House of Representatives for what it considers to be a lack of respect for the party’s supremacy.

This criticism comes after the party’s caucus called for an extension of time at its March 27 national convention and expressed concerns about the change of venue from Benin to Umuahia, the Abia State Capital.

In response to these concerns, the Labour Party leadership threatened to discipline its House of Representatives caucus, stating that party internal matters must be kept internal and that the party will not hesitate to discipline any member who does not respect its supremacy.

The party also took issue with the caucus’s claim that it was unconventional to conduct the convention before state, local government, and ward congresses.

The Labour Party pointed out that its constitution differs from that of other parties, such as the PDP and APC, and that the tenure of its national executive is four years, while the tenure of its state executives is three years.

Additionally, the Labour Party expressed disappointment in the House of Representatives caucus, stating that its members should be the ambassadors of the people and speak truth to power in the face of the country’s numerous challenges.

The party also criticized the caucus for not rising to the occasion and not supporting the party leadership, which has been facing persecution from the government in power.

The Labour Party emphasized that it is continuing with its consultations with stakeholders at all levels to ensure that a free, fair, and rancor-free convention is held.

However, it also made it clear that it will defend its ideology and constitution at all times, and will not hesitate to discipline any party member who does not respect the party’s supremacy.
