Labour Party Crisis: Abure Group Criticizes Ajaero and NLC for Ignoring History

The ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP) has taken a new turn as the Julius Abure-led faction criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for attempting to take over the party, labeling them as “bad students of history.”

Obiorah Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, made this statement in response to the NLC’s efforts to remove Abure and replace him with a caretaker committee.

He pointed out that a similar attempt was made by the Ayuba Wabba-led NLC in 2015, which ultimately failed when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated that the NLC had no legal authority to interfere with the party’s leadership.

Ifoh argued that the NLC’s current actions are misguided and that they should be focusing on consolidating the party’s recent successes rather than pursuing a “collision course” that will not benefit them or the Nigerian people.

He emphasized that the NLC is not recognized by the party’s constitution or any law as having the power to take over the party’s leadership.

The LP leadership has dismissed the caretaker committee set up by the NLC, maintaining that the NLC does not possess the constitutional mandate to make such decisions.

The faction led by Abure has called for unity and cooperation to address the challenges facing the party, rather than engaging in internal power struggles that could undermine its progress.

As the Labour Party navigates this leadership crisis, the situation serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the rule of law and respecting the boundaries of power within political organizations.

It remains to be seen how the conflict will be resolved and what impact it will have on the party’s future.
