Kano State's government is determined to wrap up every stalled project in the state while pushing forward with fresh infrastructure and service delivery initiatives, the commissioner overseeing public procurement announced on Sunday.
Comrade Nura Ma'aji Sumaila, who heads the ministry for public procurement, projects monitoring and evaluation, outlined the commitment during a media briefing on development work under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration.
The state has launched more than 1,508 development schemes costing over ₦928 billion spread across all 44 local government areas, he disclosed. So far, 799 projects have been finished, with 709 others progressing toward completion.
An additional 619 constituency projects are underway through lawmakers in the Kano State House of Assembly, Sumaila told reporters.
The current administration inherited numerous incomplete projects from previous governments and has taken ownership of them, the commissioner said. He vowed that the state would not leave a single abandoned project unfinished across any of its local government areas.
The government cancelled some contracts after contractors delivered substandard work, Sumaila revealed. Projects in Bebeji, Bunkure, Rano, Kibiya and Tsanyawa fell into this category before being reassigned to new contractors who completed them.
The ministry's core role involves tracking project execution, evaluating contractor performance and recommending contract terminations when builders fail to meet standards even after being offered chances to fix problems, he explained.
Strict oversight mechanisms ensure public money is spent wisely and contractors only get paid for verified work, Sumaila said. Payment claims are vetted by the supervising ministry first.
Officials from the Ministry of Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation then visit sites to verify completion levels before approving any funds, he added. Engineers, architects, quantity surveyors and other qualified specialists inspect projects to confirm they meet approved specifications before payment is released.
Yusuf's administration is executing projects across urban renewal, road construction, rural infrastructure, education, healthcare and security sectors, the commissioner noted. He reaffirmed the government's pledge to run transparent operations, monitor projects rigorously and deliver quality infrastructure that meets Kano's needs.
