Nearly 720 couples have completed medical screening so far. They come from across Kano State's 24 local government areas.

The screenings are part of a larger initiative. Authorities plan to conduct a state-sponsored mass wedding for 3,000 couples.

Mujahideen Aminudddeen, Deputy Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, confirmed this to Daily Trust on Tuesday. He said the exercise is still underway.

Couples from the metropolitan local governments will continue their screening on Wednesday. The venue is the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS office along Naibawa.

Participants must bring their registration forms to the screening centre. Couples from other local governments will receive their dates soon, he noted.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf revived the mass wedding programme. It targets widows, divorcees, orphans, and other vulnerable residents in the state.

The initiative covers all marriage expenses for beneficiaries. It also provides financial support and household items after the wedding.

Health screening is mandatory for all couples. Tests include checks for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, and pregnancy.

Screening for sexually transmitted infections is also part of the process. Officials say this ensures couples enter into healthy unions.

Hisbah Board staff are working with the state Ministry of Health. Both organisations are coordinating the comprehensive medical assessment programme.
