Jorge Jesus has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to continue playing for Portugal, dismissing talk that the 41-year-old is a liability for the national team. The new Portuguese coach took over on July 10 on a four-year deal and previously worked with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
"He will never be a problem for the national team or for me," Jesus told Canal 11. "Everyone has the right to their own opinion on this issue."
Jesus said he'll hold individual conversations with Ronaldo and other players when the time comes to make squad decisions. The coach stressed that he doesn't judge players based on their age alone.
"Cristiano is a symbol of Portugal, and his name will be remembered forever in history," Jesus added. "I enjoyed working with him a lot."
Ronaldo faced intense criticism during the 2026 World Cup in North America, where critics argued he was too old to lead Portugal's attack. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner turned 41 in February and managed only three goals as Portugal crashed out in the round of 16 after a 1-0 loss to Spain.
Jesus had already publicly backed Ronaldo before his appointment as Portugal's head coach. He previously said he would not hesitate to select the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star if the player was performing at his best.
The 71-year-old's backing comes as Ronaldo's international career faces an uncertain future amid questions about whether he can still deliver at the highest level. Jesus' comments suggest continuity in the Portugal project, with the veteran forward likely to remain part of squad plans going forward.
Ronaldo has been a cornerstone of Portuguese football for nearly two decades, and Jesus appears determined to manage the transition thoughtfully rather than abruptly end the striker's national team involvement.
