Rep Fred Agbedi dropped a bombshell on Wednesday. He told Channels Television that former President Goodluck Jonathan will run for office in 2027.
Jonathan intends to contest on the Peoples Democratic Party platform, Agbedi stated flatly. "Whichever way you want to put it," he added during the Politics Today broadcast.
But the lawmaker raised concerns about election observers. He claimed the PDAPC—a faction promoting certain professors and INEC officials—lacks legal recognition.
According to Agbedi, courts have already ruled against the group. The PDP sent multiple reminders to INEC about this, he noted.
Yet INEC continues working with them anyway. This appears intentional, the representative suggested.
An Abuja Federal High Court cleared the path for Jonathan last week. Justice Peter Lifu ruled on Tuesday that Jonathan qualifies as a presidential candidate.
Days earlier, the PDP faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki granted Jonathan a waiver. This allowed him to pursue the presidency without stepping down from his current role.
Not everyone supports his candidacy. Johnmary Jideobi filed suit seeking to bar Jonathan from running for any party in 2027.
Despite the legal challenge, Lifu's ruling stands. Jonathan can now contest the election.
